March 1st, 2009 "Heavy-Weight Words"
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
Heavy-Weight Words: “You never!” “You Always!” “I Want A Divorce!” “I Hate You!” “I Love You!” Sled-Hammer Words!
Did you notice that all of them start with—“I”?
2. Last week—David, the little 20 year old shepherd boy—declared, what God and he were going to do: 1st Samuel 17:45-47 45David shouted in reply, “You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of heaven and of Israel—the very God whom you have defied. 46Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head; and then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47And Israel will learn that the Lord does not depend on weapons to fulfill his plans—he works without regard to human means! He will give you to us!”
3. I believe words have power!
Points to Ponder:
1st The Power of Words!
The entire universe was formed through the speaking of words!
Genesis 1:3 “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”
Genesis 1:6 “And God said, “Let the vapors separate to form the sky above and the oceans below.”
Genesis 1:11 “And he said, “Let the earth burst forth with every sort of grass and seed-bearing plant, and fruit trees with seeds inside the fruit, so that these seeds will produce the kinds of plants and fruits they came from.” And so it was”
Genesis 1:20 “Then God said, “Let the waters teem with fish and other life, and let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.”
Genesis 1:24 “And God said, “Let the earth bring forth every kind of animal—cattle and reptiles and wildlife of every kind.” And so it was.”
Jesus, God’s son, spoke with power!
John 11:11-13 Jesus called: “Lazarus come forth!” And he got up out of the grave!
Mark 4:35-39 Jesus spoke to the wind and the wave: “Hush, and they were stilled!”
Luke 17:12-14 Jesus said: “4When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.”
The Common Man’s Tongue has power:
Numbers 14:20 God spared Israel according to Moses’ Word!
Joshua 10:12-14 God stopped the sun and the moon according to Joshua’s Word!
1st Kings 17:1 God closed the heavens and stopped the rain according to Elijah’s Word!
Point to Ponder:
2nd Words Bring Responsibility!
They show ownership!Jesus said in Matthew 15: 18“But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' Sheri and I were watching a television program the other day and the language that was being used was unbelievable! They had to bleep out just about half of the conversation that the two were having!1. How important are the “WORDS” you speak? “Sticks and stones can break my bones---but WORDS can never harm me!”---Is that true?
2. WORDS HAVE WEIGHT!
Illustration: An attractive young woman whose career necessitated a good deal of traveling was asked if she was ever bothered by uninvited male attention. She answered, "Never, I just say five words and immediately I am left alone." "What are the five words?" She said, "I simply ask, 'Are you a born-again Christian?'"
Words are very powerful: they bring death or life!
“You look so very nice today!”---Positive!
“You look like death warmed over!”---Negative!
“I love life, don’t you?”
“I’m so glad you were born!”---bringing life to someone!
“I hate you!” “I wish you were dead!”---bringing death to another!
“This is the best day of my life!” Positive
Psalms 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.”---Words are very powerful!
James says in: 3:3-10 “When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.” 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.”The tongue is a little member that boasts great things.
Consider the bit or bridle that is put in the mouth of a horse to guide and turn the horse’s body. The bit and bridle are ever so small.
Consider the small rudder or helm that guides a ship. It even controls the ship through the winds of a fierce storm.
Scientists say: “The SPEECH center of our brain controls the entire brain: thus what you speak affects your entire body!”If you speak hate it affects your entire body!
If you speak worry it affects your entire body!
If you speak depression it affects your entire body!
If you speak Love---it affects your entire body!
Phil says: “It takes ten ‘Atta-Boys’ to make up for one ‘You Jerk!’”---“I wonder how many ‘Atta-Boys’ it take to make up for being swore at?”
Points to Ponder:3rd You Reap What You Sow!
Galatians 6:7 “7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”
Our Words are like seeds!
We will get what we confess! David said: 2nd Samuel 17:45 “I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of heaven and of Israel—the very God whom you have defied.
David said: 46Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head” David said: “Today, 47Israel will learn that the Lord does not depend on weapons to fulfill his plans—he works without regard to human means! He will give you to us!”
It’s all about PROPHECY! If you say to someone: “You’re a looser!” “You’re never going to make it!”—they will fulfill that prophecy! If you say about yourself: “I’m a looser, I’ll never achiever that kind of marriage, and I’m just a born looser!” I believe you will fulfill that prophecy! You reap what you sow! Galatians 6:7 “7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”
What “Tree” Are You Eating From?----The Tree of Life or The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?----Genesis 2: 16 “And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Living in the tree of life means making choices that will lead to life and the building up of the lives of those around us. Living in the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil means making choices based on what is good and what is evil---JUDGING not FORGIVING---which leads to DEATH in us and possibly in those around us!“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
